Infection awareness in the NHS: winners and losers
Professor Robert J Pratt has discussed the issues of Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) in NHS England. Prevalence of HAI has not declined over the years and affect approx 9 percent of hospital in-patients every year and cost the NHS approx £1 bn every year. Usual source of infections are the use of medical devices. Evidence based guidelines have been published by Department of Health and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) for prevention of healthcare associated infections but there is need for translating recommendations into clinical practice and there is also variation in the implementation across the NHS. Development of medical devices which can decrease the risk of the infections are one of effective way to prevent the infections.
